Dera Bassi, despite its proximity to Chadigarh and the building boom that this has brought about, remains at heart a typical Mofussil town . The centre of the town housed the Anaj Mandi or grain market until very recently . The narrow lanes still quite impeccably clean, house a wide variety of traditional shops were you can pick up oddities like a sawdust burning stove and hand made locks slong with more modern goods
- The newly remodelled Gurdwara remains a gathering place for the devout at all hours .

Built in the 1950’s as the new capital of Punjab it is now a union territory and the shared capital of Punjab and Haryana. Beautiful modern architecture, wide roads, expansive gardens, well laid out markets and beautiful boulevards are the hall marks of this town.
